Black Widow spider in rodent station.

Our pest control technician found this black widow spider in a rodent station in Charlotte North Carolina. Rodent bait stations designed to control mice, and rats, can become a secondary hazard because of black widow spider and even copperhead snakes. These boxes provide perfect harborage for all types of spider and small snakes in North Carolina. Gloves are recommended along with caution when checking these traps. Additonally sometimes pest control may be required in or around the stations to keep other pests like snails and fireants from destroying the rodent bait.

Sewer Rats invading Charlotte toilets – www.pestcontrolcharlotte.net

What’s up with Charlotte? For the third time this month we’ve received a call about rats in a Charlotte resident’s toilet. Rats are creepy, but when they invade the smallest room in our house via plumbing pipes connected to the toilet, it’s enough to make anyone feel violated. The sewer rat, aka Norway rat, swims like a fish and is commonly known to invade toilets in big cities, but rarely do we get calls about this happening in the Queen City.
There have been no major events such as significant rain, construction, or other environmental factors that we are aware of that would cause such a sewer to bathroom invasion. Our clients are panicked and with good reason. Our rodent service includes sanitizing harborage areas of the structures rats are invading and we hit the crawl space of this home with anti-microbial because there were dead rats there too, but the source of the problem was ultimately traced to the city sewer lines. It’s understandable how this real life terror with toilet infesting sewer rats has turned our client’s life upside down. She shared a few nightmares she’s had at night about her toilet rats and after I sent my nephew, Storm Davis, into enemy rat territory armed only with a Swiss Army knife, respirator, shovel, and a pair of nads, I would opine his dreams may likewise be not so sweet tonight.

Toxic mold will kill your ass – and the answer to what the hell is Stachybotrys

HOW ENVIROSAFE ENTERED THE MOLD REMEDIATION BUSINESS
My firm, Envirosafe started in the mold remediation business back in the mid 90′s before most people even realized what mold really was. We were doing moisture control and some water restoration. Those were the days before the “mold is gold” industry evolved. We also were doing a primitive form of mold remediation by treating structural members with borates. Although the treatment was targeted at powder post beetles, we were unknowingly performing preventative treatments for mold.
In the year 2000, I decided to aggressively market the mold business. After all, this was a perfect add on business to my Environmental Asbestos Abatement, Lead Paint Remediation, and Radon Mitigation, and environmental pest control business that I had already established for my firm, Envirosafe. Having an established business of my own gave me many opportunities to try other business such as home inspections, (which by the way, failed). Otherwise, I’ve been very successful in my business ventures. One Saturday evening back in 2000 I watched an episode of CBS’s 48 hours entitled “Invisible Killers”. It was about toxic mold and featured Dr. David Strauss, Micorbiology Professor of Texas Tech University. The following Monday, I called Dr. Strauss and discussed mold and the mold remediation business with him. He informed me that the following month he was hosting a mold conference in Corpus Christi Texas. Patty wasn’t happy about me leaving for a week since Jude was only about two months old at the time, but I booked a flight and spent a week in Texas learning about remediation protocol, testing protocol, and making contacts. I learned about the protocols and standards for remediation and hooked up with Assured Indoor Air Quality out of Dallas Texas. Assured Indoor Air Quality basically sub contracted me for all their testing and remediation work in the Carolinas. It was a win, win for me at the time, but eventually their greed, or maybe mine, ended our working relationship. The support and connections to the Texas Tech microbiology lab was invaluable to my learning experience. In the years that followed, I figured out how to conquer google search results and my Environmental business including the mold remediation is booming. Check us out at www.charlotteasbestosandmoldremoval.com We’re now the largest Environmental firm in the Charlotte area and perform mold remediation for Real Estate Transaction, Water Restoration Companies, and Relocation Companies, and many other circumstances….
HARMFUL EFFECTS FROM MOLD EXPOSURE
Before writing this blog submission I did a google search on toxic mold and four images on the google image search results were of the late Brittany Murphy. It’s no secret amongst those of us in the Environmental field, and many experts and industry leaders are in agreement that toxic mold took out both Brittany Murphy AND her husband. I’ve seen it myself, clients dieing even before we get to the remediation in their home. Clients in their 30′s, 40′s, and otherwise with no health problems. I’ve also learned from experience sensitivity to mold increases with exposure and over the years I have become more susceptible to mold exposure.. I feel it when I walk out of containment.
Mold produces spores which produces mycotoxins. Some mold spores are more toxic than others. Although unseen by the naked eye, mold spores are ingested and then enter the body through the skin, mucous and airways. Once ingested, mold has the requirements to colonize and spread. In doing this, it can compromise the immune system and damage everyday processes of the body. (Dr. Ogg). … Many people have sensitivities to different molds, but the one mold that will hurt you is Stachybotrys. Back when we were doing testing for Assured Indoor Air Quality, almost every chronically ill client had Stachybotrys positively identified in their homes. See the youtube video I made of Stachybotrys in a Gastonia Home at the link below.. http://youtu.be/u-q1RfU09aM
The Gastonia homeowner was on oxygen and died within months of the video we made. I can say with authority, mold kills. Stachybotrys however, does have certain requirements like temperatures of at least 72 degrees, and a cellulose host (wood, paper, or cardboard) that maintains at least 25% moisture content. Often we find Stachybotrys under sinks and behind refrigerators where homeowners were unaware of the moisture problem until mold growth is well established.
This is my entry for January 31, 2012, the day of my baby girl’s birthday. Off to Outback for a celebration and remember folks, I blog because it helps my google rank only…. Otherwise I wouldn’t waste time with this nonsense.

Invasion of the Kudzu Bugs
Posted: January 30, 2012 in Kudzu BugsTags: Asian Needle Ants, Bed Bugs, Charlotte Pest Control, Gastonia NC Pest Control, Kudzu Bugs, www.pestcontrolcharlotte.net
A decade ago calls in our office for Asian Needle Ants, Bed Bugs, and Kudzu bugs were non-existent. These days, we’re finding all three in abundance. Asian needle ants are like fire ants on steroids except instead of building mounds they nest sporadically under rocks and throughout the landscape making homeowners more susceptible to encountering on of their highly toxic stings. I’ll save Bed Bug discussions for another blog post and elaborate more on the Asian Needle ant later, but for now, this blog post is to discuss the invasion of the Kudzu bug.
The Kudzu Bug is classified as an occasional invader. Similar in terms of being a general nuisance to that of box elder bugs, and lady bugs. They are proliferating here much like the namesake Kudzu vine. We first got a call about these in 2009 when a customer brought them in to the office for Patty to identify. An insect most everyone here at Envirosafe had never encountered. Thanks to Paul Johnson at Clemson, we were able to identify this insect, which in 2009 was relatively rare. In 2010 we became well acquainted with the Kudzu Bug as calls increased exponentially about them.
Even my grandmother’s house was covered with Kudzu bugs that year (see photo above at her Gastonia NC Home). 2011 was the year of the Kudzu bug explosion though. All summer we treated them and found out a repellent wettable powder (Demon WP) was the most effective treatment for Kudzu bugs. The map below was published by the NPMA which is obviously flawed since we were getting calls apparently two years before they got the memo.
We just purchased a high powered microscope for positive identification of pest species. I’m looking forward to this year and discovering what new pests will be creeping into our customer’s homes.

Fornication VS Formication. Which one you should be concerned with?
Posted: January 24, 2012 in UncategorizedTags: Ants, Charlotte Pest Control, Envirosafe, Formication, HomeSpectors, Pest Control
Hopefully neither of these terms affect your life. Formication should never be confused with fornication. One is the delusional belief that you have insects crawling all over (and under) your skin: the other is a Sin (I think??). If the two sensations are combined you should consult either a doctor, or maybe a priest, but NOT an environmental pest control company in Charlotte North Carolina. Either way, Jarrod Goforth or myself will not be able to help you if you think either of these terms are problematic in your life. I can’t count the number of times Envirosafe gets calls from a customer apparently suffering from Ekbom Syndrome. (look it up). There is absolutely nothing Envirosafe can do for you. Couple interesting facts concerning Formication is the fact that it’s derived from Formica, the Latin word for ant. Additionally, the only arthropods that infest humans are scabies mites and human lice. NO insect or mite can live in the Environment and switch to infesting the human body. Sadly, we encounter many clients each year who I can confirm with authority have delusional parasitis. We abate asbestos, remediate mold, mitigate radon, perform environmental pest control services and even have quite a collection of air scrubbers and ozone machines for mold spores, but unfortunately, imaginary parasites are not part of our Environmental Services scope of work. Referring these clients to a medical doctor is not what they want to hear, but it’s the only option we have. -Rodney Allman CIE, Envirosafe Environmental Services www.charlotteasbestosandmoldremoval.com 704-392-2241
